Pope Francis -- Put down the cell phone during mass

Wow. I will embarrassingly admit that I have sat before Mass and checked a score on a Saturday late afternoon waiting for Mass to start. My wife would give me the stink eye.

On Wednesday, a fiery Pope Francis chastised those who spend Mass talking to others, looking at their phone or even taking pictures during papal liturgies, saying these are distractions that take focus away from the “heart of the Church,” which is the Eucharist. "The Mass is not a show: it is to go to meet the passion and resurrection of the Lord,” the Pope said Nov. 8. “The Lord is here with us, present. Many times we go there, we look at things and chat among ourselves while the priest celebrates the Eucharist... But it is the Lord!”

In particular, Francis condemned the use of cell phones to take photos at papal Masses. At one point during the Mass the priest says, “we lift up our hearts,” he said. “He does not say, ‘We lift up our phones to take photographs!’”

It can surely grab our attention. For events, bring a camera, not a phone. I've been purposefully leaving the phone in the car.....gym, restaurant, soccer practice, whatever. It works. Be present!

Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

I don't laugh. I have the smart phone, I'm looking next for a dumb phone and let that be bolstered by the internet enabled tablet.

At my synagogue we’re not even allowed to have phones out, we turn them off before we even walk in or leave them in the car.

I pay about $20 a month for this thing. That's a big attraction.
