    Veterans Day

After 11 a.m. (Mountain Time) and no one has started a Veterans Day thread yet? I'm a little surprised.

Anyway, happy Veterans Day to all, and particularly those who served in uniform and their family members!

The wife and I got married twenty-eight years ago today, while we were both in the Navy, stationed at a base in northern Cali that no longer exists. We chose November 11th because we both happened to be day workers at the time (as opposed to rotating watch standers) and it was a day that we both had off. (I remember her and her mother asking me if I had any suggestions for colors for the reception decorations, and I said, "Well, it's going to be Veterans Day - how about red, white and blue?" They just looked at me, went back to planning the wedding and never asked for my input again. Mission accomplished.)

Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.” - Robert E. Howard

"Only a rank degenerate would drive 1,500 miles across Texas and not eat a chicken fried steak." - Larry McMurtry

Happy Veterans Day to all active and retired military as well as those who have given the ultimate sacrifice.

And Happy Anniversary @Standing Wolf. Great story and important reminder of why it can be dangerous to ask a man for his opinion about decor.

A veteran gave me a poppy at Walmart. Huh? Oh, yea.

We were in Applebee’s today with my WWII father in law, amazing how many vets were there. Free menu for the vets. WWII, Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq were represented. Kinda weird but nice too getting all these thank you for your service and handshakes all around.

""We cannot walk alone," the preacher cried. "And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back." America, we cannot turn back. Not with so much work to be done. Not with so many children to educate, and so many veterans to care for. Not with an economy to fix and cities to rebuild and farms to save. Not with so many families to protect and so many lives to mend. America, we cannot turn back. We cannot walk alone. At this moment, in this election, we must pledge once more to march into the future. Let us keep that promise - that American promise - and in the words of Scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess." Barack Obama

I thought Veteran's Day was Friday because all of the schools I passed were closed when I drove into work. I feel silly in that I talked to many friends and colleagues that are veterans wishing them thanks for their service. Doh! a day too early.
