1 in 3 dementia cases preventable

One in three cases of dementia could be prevented by tackling risk factors such as education and depression, a large new international review estimates.

A team of 24 experts in dementia conducted the review on prevention and care.

In Thursday's issue of The Lancet and at this year's Alzheimer's Association International Conference in London, researchers model how nine health and lifestyle factors contribute to about 35 per cent of dementia.

For instance, they said that if everyone reaped the brain stimulation and interaction of staying in school until over the age of 15, the total number of dementia cases could be reduced.
1 in 3 dementia cases are potentially preventable, report says - Health CBC

Interesting. The article lists a bunch of contributing factors. I know that there is also an increasing list of pharmaceuticals shown to cause dementia, as well. But this article is specific to age-specific dementia (so, lack of factors like alcohol-induced dementia, drug-related dementia, so forth).

I just read an article about this yesterday in Consumer reports. New studies have found that dementia can be brought on by bad habits. Sitting too much, poor nutrition, medication to name a few. It also said loneliness little human contact

So the same inactivity that's killing us in a hundred ways is also costing us our minds. Makes sense. ( He said sitting and typing)

Doesn't surprise me. Lifestyle probably plays a factor in a lot of diseases.

No probably, it does. CHF, CAD, MI, much pancreatic and liver disease, many cancers, almost all copd etc. Our medical system is now designed to feed off and treat the ravages of lifestyle.

    Red face

Uncle Ferd says if Granny has another accident anna police take her license - he ain't cartin' her around...
Hundreds of driving licences taken off dementia sufferers in Japan
Fri, 03 Nov 2017 - Tens of thousands more may have the condition, police say.
Nearly 700 elderly drivers in Japan have had their licences revoked, after it was found they had late-stage dementia. Police say screenings found about 30,000 more may be suffering, and must return for more tests. Japan has the oldest population in the world and close to 50,000 people are diagnosed with dementia yearly.

Japan has some driving schools for senior citizens, to battle a spate of accidents

New road traffic laws require those above 75 to undergo regular cognitive function tests. Every year, there are hundreds of severe road accidents involving people over 75. In 1993 there were 62 cases of fatal accidents caused by people over 75.

In 2016, Japan recorded a total of 459 fatal accidents, caused by elderly drivers. Businesses are trying to incentivise elderly drivers to give up their driver's licence, by offering them a range of products and services ranging from discounted funeral services to cheap noodles.

I give this "international review" credit for looking at lifestyle issues as a way to prevent dementia but I think they are way too pessimistic when they claim only 1 out of 3 cases can be prevented. What about the other 65%? Why are they destined to get dementia? Bad genes? Sorry, that's just not true. Unless 1/3 refers to those who are willing to make positive lifestyle changes, then I might agree with their pessimism because I accept the fact that many people (perhaps 2/3) are just not willing to sacrifice their bad lifestyle habits.

Lets blame lifestyle while giving corporations that genetically alter our food and use so many chemical that alter our food in the name of profit for their bottom line a free pass so no one makes them responsible for their actions. People are so brainwashed by articles that shield corporations that sell food products to the public by using personal lifestyle habits as the reason why so many people have these medical conditions.

When are people going to realize that they have been lied to on so many subjects that work to get their support on these issues which is not based on the truth?
