I guess they have to use patio planters because if they stick a shovel in the ground, it might open up and swallow their house, so I guess I get your point

I was just kidding. I own acres of land and I still plant some garden plants--vegetable or otherwise--in containers, buckets, baskets and raised beds and such, particularly if they are plants that are not readily weeded around like leafy things--lettuces, choys, etc.--or need more frequent watering than the gardens out in the field.

Container, propagation is more efficiant and economical. Or at least, raised beds, with weed cloth, mulch.

We cant tomatoes worth a $#@! in the summer, night time temps are to high, barely sets fruit!

I've heard that from a lot of Florida growers. There are some heat tolerant varieties but I forget their names that are better suited for that climate. In my area, getting them to turn red is the bigger problem, especially earlier in the year. By the time the first flush ripen, the skins are often leathery and tough. Leave them on too long waiting for the full moon, and the deer, raccoons, and groundhogs will clean you out.

Depends what you are growing. I think cherry tomatoes do better in containers than full-sized ones. Then there are other things like okra that you need so much of, you would need way too many containers for that. I think cucumbers do better in raised beds than they do in the ground or in containers. At least mine do.
