    Why Liberalism Failed

This book, Why Liberalism Failed won't be out for a couple months yet but I found this blurb by the author, Patrick J. Deneen:

Has liberalism failed because it has succeeded?

Of the three dominant ideologies of the twentieth century—fascism, communism, and liberalism—only the last remains. This has created a peculiar situation in which liberalism’s proponents tend to forget that it is an ideology and not the natural end-state of human political evolution. As Patrick Deneen argues in this provocative book, liberalism is built on a foundation of contradictions: it trumpets equal rights while fostering incomparable material inequality; its legitimacy rests on consent, yet it discourages civic commitments in favor of privatism; and in its pursuit of individual autonomy, it has given rise to the most far-reaching, comprehensive state system in human history. Here, Deneen offers an astringent warning that the centripetal forces now at work on our political culture are not superficial flaws but inherent features of a system whose success is generating its own failure.

Don't mistake here liberalism for modern progressive liberal, consider it classical liberalism, still adhered to by libertarians, the progressive liberal offshoot, and the conservative reaction to the progressivism.

Some might quibble with his selection of fascism, instead of, say, nazism. Communism I would assume includes socialism.

Topic is fairly open, but please if you post contribute to discussion.

    Looks great. Very European.
Whoever criticizes capitalism, while approving immigration, whose working class is its first victim, had better shut up. Whoever criticizes immigration, while remaining silent about capitalism, should do the same.

Assistant Prof at Notre Dame. But it does have a European perspective on liberalism.

That's what I meant. Interesting. It's rare among Americans but most common among traditional Catholics.

If LBJ would have left SS along we wouldn't be in this problem now. Also, if the dem party would stop selling we will be socialist it would help.
I am tired of everyone fighting with each other. This is all by design.

That's minor, I think, to what the OP is pointing out. Out of the Enlightenment arose, in opposition to feudalism, an individualism that promoted self-government. That's great, I think, but it has led to its own undermining with a government so centralized it's become a center of power for the rent seeking of favors by the rich and has in effect lost touch with the people.

Sounds like there might be some misunderstanding about intent. Is he basically talking about librarians? If so, they clearly are dead and gone. The days of a society surviving without government are long gone and with that I say GOOD!.
Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I digress....

    Librarians?

But you've hit the nail on the head there, the days of individual liberty are dead and gone, sold for a pocketful of security.

What I'd imagine he intends to argue is that increases in personal autonomy have risen in tandem with increased state authority and state intervention into realms where it was formerly excluded. It's an interesting paradox. The liberated modern man lives in states whose reach is unprecedented.
