Saudi Arabia & Iran, On the Brink of War?

    On the Brink of War

Muhammd Bin-Salman’s purge in Saudi Arabia is the prelude to something bigger

    By Abdel Bari Atwan

Our region stands on the brink of war. We should not let small details — such as the resignation of Lebanese Prime Minister Saad al-Hariri’s resignation or the detention of princes and former ministers in Saudi Arabia — divert us from the big picture and the real developments taking place behind the scenes. The really dangerous phase is the one that will follow Crown Prince Muhammad Bin-Salman’s purge on the domestic Saudi front. It may be the precursor to scenarios for a regional war that could, without exaggeration, end up being the most devastating in its modern history.

All that is currently happening is part of a carefully planned and crafted scheme, and the prelude to a sectarian war waged in ‘Arab nationalist’ guise against the growing power of ‘Shia’ Iran and its surrogates in Yemen, Lebanon and Iraq with American, regional and Israeli backing.

The old Saudi Arabia is no more. Wahhabism is breathing its last, has been all but buried and is in the process of becoming history. A fourth Saudi state, dressed in the garb of modernity and based on different alliances, is being born.

When its would-be founder and man of the moment, Muhammad Bin-Salman, accuses Iran of mounting a ‘direct military attack that may amount to an act of war’ against his country by allegedly supplying missiles to factions in Yemen, and his stance is endorsed and supported by the US, it is clear that a new American-led alliance is taking shape in the region.

Will a massive war between Sunnis and Shiites erupt in the coming weeks and months? Will Americans be dragged into yet another Middle Eastern conflict by their meddlesome, corrupt government? Hard to say. But we can be sure that the War Party in Washington DC is always looking for new wars to fight in and that Iran is a perpetual target of theirs. Trump, the man who promised to keep Americans out of new Middle Eastern wars, seems excited at the prospect of a war between Saudi Arabia and Iran. But will he stop short of involving Americans? Remains to be seen.
Power always thinks it has a great soul, and vast views, beyond the comprehension of the weak. And that it is doing God service when it is violating all His laws.

I personally think the Saudis have so much dirt on so many in Washington that we don't dare cross them .

Where did you get the idea Trump wants a war between them? Crystal ball?

He's been spreading propaganda that escalates tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Trump has a tendency to shoot his mouth off without thinking first. Part of me likes that about him, whereas the other part finds it extremely disquieting.

Trump has become very friendly towards Saudi Arabia since he became the president. This despite the fact that he correctly labeled them supporters of terrorism during his campaign. The "crackdown" in Saudi Arabia, which Trump praised, is a laughably transparent attempt by the current rulers to consolidate their own power and crush any potential challenge to their position. It also seems to presage a movement towards war with Iran, which would be absolutely devastating for the region. Furthermore, it would probably send gas prices through the roof here in the west.

Did Trump Enterprises do business with Saudi Arabia? What do you mean, since he's been President? The Saudis bought many apartments from Trump Real Estate.

And.....are crackdowns within Iran a move towards war with SA? Iran....known for its' crackdowns and silencing political dissent.....

Eventually the great Sunni/Shia struggle will happen...

... to settle once and for all...

    ... which one is dominant.

I think it would be more accurate to characterize the struggle as between Sunni-Wahhabism and Shiites. Many Sunnis hate the Wahhabists. But there are schisms within Shia Islam, too. Neither is a monolithic belief system.
