I am not employed by the store.

Im not, and I resent being made to work for them for no pay.

    I'm talking about self.checkout lines.

It's not just that I'm being made to work for free, it's that I'm doing a job someone used to get paid to do. I don't want to take someone else's job, they probably need it. I'm helping stuff the pockets of some corporate bigwig while someone else is unemployed. That sucks.

The equipment is invariably in poor condition. Scanners so scratched you have to wave your product back and forth over them, screens that are all but unreadable and have been worn out on all the spots you need to push. The one employee who is watching all 15 stations knows less about them than I do. And there's is always that one item that scans fine but the computer doesn't recognize it or know the price.

I went 3 places on the way home from work.

Home Depot because they have led bulbs on sale. One manned checkout line with 10 people waiting so I go to the self checkout. Scanner is so scarred up it can't read the barcode. The attendant is helping some moron with 2 carts full of crap who thought self check was the right place for him so I moved to the next empty space and scanned my item. The attendant who couldn't be bothered with helping me flipped out because I abandoned a machine after starting to check out.

Target for cat litter. Two manned lines open, both backed up. This time the machinery works perfect but the damn thing ran outta change after in put in my money.

Dillons for some local grown fresh veggies. Of course I grabbed the only damned zucchini without a Barcode on it, and the touchscreen is trashed.

And they need to STFU! "Place the item in the bag" I did place the $#@!ing item in the bag. It's a pack of chewing gum and the scale under the bagging area isn't sensitive enough to tell.whether I put it there or not.

I hate these things. I actually think I'd rather slam my fingers in a door than use another one.

I feel your pain, self checkouts are a failed experiment, that $#@!ing scale, just breath on it, don't even think about moving anything.

I generally like self check out.

One store near my old place was a pain in the ass though. Because I used my own bags- that didn't fit on their machine. So when you put your checked product into your own bag that isn't on their machine the unit would shut down- tell you to return the item and rescan. So i hit the help button after every scan. I told them they needed to turn that feature off. I had my own bags and was not using their plastic bags.

They work well enough if the equipment is good. The scanner should not ever even be touched on a good machine, so it would never get scratched. However, I do prefer to keep people employed and if I'm not in a massive hurry, I'll wait in line for a cashier.

I have just learned to avoid them with certain items--like garden seeds. You could buy 100 packs and combined they would never trip the scales at Lowe's LOL

Hate em, but if it is open!

Got to love the watchful stare of the eagle eye attendant! Until you need help!

I was mortified the first time that happened. However, it wasn't my fault - just a glitch in the machine. Most of the ones that I've used have been pretty straightforward and I only use them when I don't want to wait. Plus they are not really set up for a full cart of anything. There isn't really any space allowance.

Now if you were a woman, you could just put your handbag on the scale. Problem solved.

I think that actually throws up another red flag. IIRC I tried something similar once with an item I had skipped bagging and the scales set off the alarm because the item was too heavy for the item I was purchasing, prompting the CSA to have to come running with their little necklace fix it card.
