Found this while I was looking up more information:

The YPJ have been instrumental in the battle to take back control of Kobani from ISIS. These women fighters know that, if captured, they will be raped and killed; therefore they fight knowing that they must succeed in battle or become a suicide warrior to avoid being captured. The YPJ is also thought to be feared by ISIS, who believes that if a female kills them in battle, it will be a disgrace and dishonor, and will prohibit them from entering paradise.

Thanks to their role in liberating Kobani in Syria, the YPJ have captured the attention of both socialist and non-socialist feminists around the world. Additionally, thanks to the YPJ, millions of people around the world have been introduced to the plight of the Kurds in Syria and beyond.

I was personally elated when I heard of this. This is the kind of stuff @IMPress Polly should be talking about.

    Feminism is nonsense.

That said, I am never happy to see women forced into the role of warrior but I am always happy to see women defend themselves.

The women there do not have much of an option; they also have to fight against ISIS and it is a bonus that ISIS actually fears being killed by a woman (I find that pretty awesome - fear the thing that you try to keep down through abuse and archaic thinking). For international volunteers, I think that they see this as fellow women taking the risks that a lot of people just ignore because we live happily ignorant lives when it comes to day to day conditions in places where ISIS is. Help your fellow woman, I guess. Help them fight for the right to exist and to exist with more freedoms that first world women take for granted.

I find this rather dubious to be honest. The source for this particular claim appears to be a random female Kurdish fighter. ISIS also appears to have enthusiastic (and violent) female supporters.

Quite frankly, if the members of ISIS weren't such savages I would be a little more sympathetic to them but they quickly made any such sympathy problematic to say the least. Radical Islam is a reaction to globalization just like the disgust European populations show toward immigration.

Radical Islamism is more than a reaction to globalism. It seeks to convert or conquer. It has since the time of Mohammad.

No, it's not. The insanity of the radical Islam, understood as ISIS et al, is distinctly modern.

I rather think it a back to the basics sort of thing for modern Muslims that sign on. It is 7th century living.
