Woodstock was not Jimi's best band, nor was it even close to his best work. Check out instead his appearance at the Monterey Pop Festival.

I loved Dick Cavett! That was a great interview, but the anthem at Woodstock was more an amazing improvised act of frustration than anything.
Woodstock sucked for Jimi. No one saw him play. Half a million people saw the laughable Sha Na Na. Maybe 10,000 saw Jimi jam after the rain, amongst the heaps of trash, and the mud.
His set was, like, 8 in the morning.

Jimmy James (Hendrix) backed up Little Richard, B.B. King, Sam Cooke and the Isley Brothers. Ike Turner said Hendrix backed up his band but Tina said he never did. When he went to England there were several different stories about his relationship with Eric Clapton. In the movie Hendrix he had a difficult time just getting a jam session because Clapton and Creme were big and they never heard of Hendrix. In the movie they did jam and Clapton seemed impressed. In another movie All by my side Hendrix played with Creme on stage in front of people. In that movie Hendrix opened with a cool rift and Clapton unplugged his guitar and huffed off the stage refusing to play. Hard to tell what the truth is but later on when Clapton's career was very successful he did say good things about Hendrix.
Hendrix was as much an outlaw in the rock world as Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings were on the country scene. None of them did well boxed up with what was acceptable but when they went their own way they became big. If Hendrix had lived he probably would have done the same thing and who knows what kind of music he would have made.
Off topic but if you get a chance to, watch Mike Judge Presents. They just finished up the first season and it was excellent.

I've heard that a couple of them fired him because he was so good that people directed their attention to him and not them.
If you haven't already watch the concert put together by Keith Richards honoring Chuck Berry. The concert had many great musicians playing Chuck Berry songs. Lots of great one on one interviews including one with Little Richard where he talks about telling Hendrix to tone it down because he was being upstaged. Hail Hail Rock -N- Roll.
