    Open carry in Fl

Courts turn down petition to make it legal. I don't get OC opponents, they feel A-OK when a paramilitary Cop is right around them, but Joe Citizen is scary as hell with a handgun.

ALLAHASSEE A controversial measure that would allow Floridians with concealed-weapons permits to carry those items openly in public easily cleared its first hurdle on Tuesday, but the legislation still faces several more tests before it could become law.
Florida has prohibited the open carry of firearms for nearly 20 years, and efforts in recent years by gun-rights lobbyists to change that status quo haven’t been successful. The latest attempt, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fort Walton Beach, got off to a promising start Tuesday when the House Criminal Justice Subcommittee passed HB 163 by an 8-4 vote despite resistance from critics.
Gaetz said the bill “restores and vindicates” Second Amendment rights and promotes public safety. But those with concerns said the proposal should, at a minimum, include better training requirements and also better shield property owners’ rights if they don’t want weapons in their homes or businesses.
5 states and the District of Columbia prohibit openly carrying weapons: Florida, California, Illinois, New York and South Carolina.

Vehement opponents said an open-carry law in Florida would instill fear, rather than calm.

“When I am out at Starbucks and there’s a cop there with his gun, it’s intimidating and it’s scary,” said Shawn Bartelt, a retiree and mother of two teenagers from Orlando. “I do not want to walk around when I walk my dogs and know that somebody’s carrying a gun out there. … I don’t want my kids raised in a world where we’re being less civilized.” Gaetz argued that fighting for gun-owners’ rights has the opposite effect, and he said federal crime statistics are on his side.
“While we will certainly hear from shrill voices on the left that open carry will lead to the wild, wild west, that is not borne out by any of the data we have,” Gaetz said. He said U.S. Department of Justice statistics from 2012 actually show less violent crime in states with

Open carry is much more in line with the 2nd Amendment than conceal carry.

Exactly, the article says you would need a concealed carry permit to OC, that makes little sense.

I do favor CC, OC is asking for trouble, from cops and crooks though.

Even if legal (in my situation) I would not open carry.

There's two trains of thoughts in talking about OC. One is that it deters crime, the other is that the perp would target you first if they had any intention of breaking bad. We have open carry in GA, with a permit, and I don't see anyone running scared whenever someone walks around with a gun.

What kind of permit is needed for OC? I assume a concealed carry? That does not make sense, to me.

People come in and out of the pawn shop, carrying long guns thru the parking lot, doubt it's legal but no one ever raises the issue.

(on second thought, I bet the law has some exception, written in)

I think there is an exception for the purchase of a firearm and transporting it to your residence. GA allows you to carry a firearm in your vehicle and posses one in your home without a permit, but you will need a permit to carry a firearm on your person in public.

I don't know what school I fall in, but even assuming I could I don't think I would choose to open carry. Why draw attention to yourself?

I would only do so in the woods, or on private property.

Occasionally, I will open carry a belt knife. But most often, a clip folder.

I am against open carry and many guys I know are, there are many reasons, ill list a few

Right now I can carry in any store concealed, in states with open carry if a Business puts up a sign no guns allowed you have to abide by that. That means if walmart does any store etc. When they say no guns that includes concealed carry.

I dont see a need for people to carry around AR-15s slung over their shoulder or 45s and 44 mags on their hips and making other people uncomfortable.

If I were inclined to shoot a guy with an Ar-15 I would draw and he would be dead before his hand touched the strap. Its senseless to open carry and advertise.

There is no benefit to it that I can see

We carry openly or concealed here with no permit needed. If you are a U.S. citizen at least 21 years old and can legally own a gun you can carry it as you see fit. I really don't see that many people carrying openly but I know a lot of people who carry concealed. I can't remember ever seeing anyone carrying a long gun strapped to their shoulder. I see a few carrying a holstered weapon but only rarely. The only time I carry openly with long guns is when I put them in or take them out of my vehicle to go shoot them. When I do that I strap on a pistol or revolver but I don't stop at the grocery store to shop on my way. I don't have a problem with the few who do carry openly even though I won't do it. At least I can keep an eye on them. I like concealed because I don't want any nut jobs to know I have a gun.

Well, the house just passed a bill to allow conceal carry across state lines, which is a step in the right direction.
