Look at the bright side, that may be the only time in your life that your government gives you, the "privilege" to have fun with guns!

By the way, Willie old sod, ever hear of a chap named Adolph Hitler? Bit before our time I wager. What about Neville Chamberlain. An imbecile if there ever was one. We can go on all night blaming the previous generation for all of our ills but the truth is, like teenage slang, every generation has its hero's and demons.
Lol, it's not often you are wrong - but you are right again!

And yes we do history in class, and I learnt about Hitler, and Stalin, and Pol Pot, and Genghis Khan, and Senator McCarthy, so I know the world has always had problems, and that when I have children, they will grow up and say the same things about the world my generation left them. I was being light-hearted in my response to how wonderful the world was when the oldies were young, and it gave me an excuse to use one of my fave Monty Python skits.

Oh and BTW, it's not important, but something like 'Willie old sod', is not usual British usage. We would use Bill, or Billy, as a familiar form of William (Willie or Willy would refer to to a penis, or someone called Wilfred ), and we would refer to the earth or land of England as 'the old sod'. We might call someone a 'silly sod', and use 'sod' in lots of other ways - like in 'sod it!' or 'the sodding thing!', but not usually as a form of address.

Lol, maybe, but I don't call trying to kill some other poor sod, or having him shoot me - having fun with guns.

Guns were simply a part of our upbringing. When each kid (4 of us) turned 10, Dad enrolled us in the local gun club's child safety classes. We learned how to safely handle firearms and shoot them responsibly. IMO, gun safety should be included in in our educational system, say 7th grade.

We even shot archery in middle school, in the gym with youth bows, that is unheard of today.

In 2015 the median family income in the U.S. was $55,775 with most families having both parents working. That's pretty much what one earner made in 1960. Seems like today women have to work just to pay the taxes to keep even with what one person earned in 1960.

IMO there was more education and less indoctrination in 1960 schools than there is today. Kids are far more greatly influenced by all sorts of media today than then. Because the parents both have to work the media has become a prime babysitter for the kids. If we would have had all the computers and television programming and smart phones back then and no parents to shoo us out of the house to play so we didn't get fat and if they had time to prepare more healthy food and better eating habits we might have been like kids are today.
Yep, punishment was having to stay inside rather than be outside with our friends, building a fort, fishing in a nearby creek, or putting penny's on the railroad tracks in hopes of derailing the next train, lol.

I wanted 14 kids when I was young, then God said uh, nope. Probably a blessing.

No disrespect taken. When I was your age I too thought I knew more than the mouldies and crumblies of the time.
My perspective changed a lot as I grew older and actually experienced life.
