FBI Texts Say Russia Investigation Was ‘Insurance Policy’ Against Trump Win



Disturbing texts surfaced Tuesday night from a former investigator with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s team, possibly exposing political bias within the investigation into the Trump campaign. According to reports from CNN, Peter Strzok, during his time at the FBI, sent text messages that expressed strong anti-Trump sentiments.

Strzok used foul language to attack then-candidate Trump while he served as one of the top FBI counterintelligence officials. But perhaps most troubling was Strzok’s description of the FBI’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential campaign as an “insurance policy” against a Trump win (emphasis added):

Later in a text from August 15, 2016, Strzok tells Page: “I want to believe the path you threw out for consideration in Andy’s office” — an apparent reference to Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe — “that there’s no way he gets elected — but I’m afraid we can’t take that risk. It’s like an insurance policy in the unlikely event you die before you’re 40 . . . . “ Page does not appear to have responded, according to records reviewed by CNN.


Strzok wasn’t only involved in the Russia investigation. He was instrumental in investigations into Hillary Clinton’s email server. Wednesday’s revelations raise questions about whether he may have influenced the probe in a partisan way:

As the former No. 2 official in counterintelligence, Strzok helped lead the FBI’s investigation of Hillary Clinton’s private email server and was involved in opening the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election, but he was reassigned to the human resources division this summer.
