I am all for the government creating more opportunities kind of like a buffet that serves the general public. Unfortunately, almost everything with the government comes with so many strings attached, it often ends up being a trap in reality like student loans, etc.

So much of what the government does is serve the interests of a few against the interests of the many. Concentrated benefits and dispersed costs.

Sure, but some things are silly. For instance every public school student in my city gets free lunch because a requisite percentage was reached where the whole system could opt into free lunch. In the process, the city more or less gave up any pretense of control over food service.

Much of it is silly. And control should be as local as possible so people there can get involved and have a say.
