Expired parking meters are helping feed the hungry in Kentucky.

Expired parking meters are helping feed the hungry in Kentucky. For the second year in a row, people in Lexington can pay their parking fines with canned goods for local food banks.Parking violators can donate 14-15 ounce cans of food for a typical $15 dollar parking fine. If it’s a more expensive infraction, the city’s parking authority is willing to accept even more cans. The “Food for Fines” program runs through December 15.In 2015 alone, the innovative effort took in 6,200 cans of food for more than 600 citations — worth about $14,000. Collectively, the program has gathered about 16,000 meals, which is about 24,500 cans of food weighing 12 tons.

I ran across this story and thought it was a really good idea. If anyone has any other ideas they'd like to share on how to help the needy during the holidays please feel free to post.

Good idea, I donate on a regular basis to a food bank that I believe is on the up and up and truly helps people.

That is a fine program. My city did away with meters because they were more expensive than the revenue they generated.

All of the grocery stores here had food baskets and ask people to donate. Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't but they still collect a ton (literally) of food. I bought $70.00 worth of can goods for one of the baskets.

Americans are the most charitable people on the planet, giving to church groups, organizations like Habitat for Humanity and various food pantries. I don't know who gives more, liberals or conservatives and it really doesn't matter (except from a hypocrisy standpoint).

You're a good man Nathanbforrest. I agree, Americans are exceedingly generous no matter which side of the aisle we sit.
