    What good is instant replay?

I'm watching the 49ers trying to close out Jacksonville, which they should but are having a little trouble doing so . But a Jacksonville fumble returned by the 49ers for a TD was late called an incomplete pass . No problem , we have instant replay ( the TD wouldn't count now but the turnover would) . The reciever took 2-3 steps CLEARLY and made a football move. The announcers , my wife, I all certain it would be over turned. Not even a real question.
    But they let it stand.
Obvious over turn they let stand doing nothing but wasting time . I have seen it happen several times this year. What's the point? They don't come much more obvious than this. So why have a review system? It's broken.

The officiating in the NFL is at an all time low. As a group, they are incompetent.

I am against the instant replay. If a ref is incompetent or corrupt fire him. Otherwise let his call stand.

Especially since they are not getting the calls right even upon replay!

Some instant replay is awesome. Look at tennis. Line disputes are eliminated.

Instant replay in Baseball was a much-needed innovation. I think the umpires' calls are upheld something like 80% of the time, but it's in that other 20% that many games are ultimately won or lost. No team should have to score extra runs to compensate for an umpire's ineptitude. The comparison I like to make is to something like swimming competitions. When the technology became available to measure which swimmer reached the edge of the pool first with exactness, it wasn't rejected because anyone wanted to see some fat guy leaning over the edge of the pool saying, "He was first". Now they just have to utilize the technology they already have - and the t.v. networks use - to call balls and strikes, and the situation will be even better.

I was deeply surprised at how good balls and strikes were, much less how impossible calls at first actually are.

What needs to be corrected is the attitude of the umpires who brag about "their" strike zone. You have umpires who have one strike zone for early in a game, a different zone for later in the game, etc. You have umpires who have one strike zone for veteran pitchers and another for rookies; the same for hitters. Any umpire who calls a strike zone other than what the rule book specifies needs to be looking for another line of work.

You make many good points Wolf, but two points even when repay works

    1) It takes time, kills rythm and big MO.
    2) There are always some judgement calls that aren't subject to replay and I keep thinking such bad calls used to balance each other out and we have disturbed the balance. I know that's bit odd, but that's how I feel

I agree with you, but I actually thought the problem was much much worse.

We need to actually codify that ties go to the base runner, or not. As it is it's just a cool thing to say that doesn't actually exist in the rule book, like: looking back for the ball with cornerbacks, and over the back for rebounding basketball players.
