That is truly horrendous. It reminds me - without being too morbid, I hope - of an incident that happens in a novel, I think, that I read many years ago. A boy living out in the country has much the same thing happen to him; his dog is run over and is suffering terribly, and the boy has to run to the house and get his father's rifle and come back and shoot his beloved dog. He feels so horribly that he tries to turn the rifle on himself, but it is taller than he is and he can't manage to do it.
Anyway, of course I can have no real conception of how you truly feel, but I still hope that you're able to bring yourself to letting a dog into your life again someday soon. It may sound corny, but you've got to imagine that if the dog you had could advise you about it, he wouldn't want you to be dog-less. Lots of good boys (and good girls) out there hoping for a warm, loving home for the New Year.

What an awful experience for one so young. I can see how you would be reluctant to feel that kind of pain again. On the other hand, there are so many poor dogs in shelters. I hope one day you'll allow another dog to enrich your life once again and repay him by giving him a home.

Lily does that too...and she is a long, long ways from being a purebred of any kind. We haven't had her DNA-tested yet, but we're pretty sure she is a pitbull cross with some sort of long-legged sight hound or hunting dog, with a long, lean body, a whip tail, and maybe a little badger and kangaroo mixed in. When she does that, we call her "The Longest Dog in the World", because she almost looks like she might be.
