There's a lot of truth to that really, the stronger the sense of humor, the higher the insecurities tend to be. Full disclosure. I tend to be joking constantly, yet also am extremely insecure. @Green Arrow can attest to both. My mom sent me this in response to the death of Robin Williams.
As to where my sense of humor comes from, I attribute it most to my grandpa, though I didn't appreciate him enough until after his death. When I was little, I was extremely serious, with no sense of humor. My grandpa would tease me, and I thought he hated me. In high school, my sense of humor developed as a defense mechanism. Unfortunately, my grandpa died of bone cancer before he could see it. Now I joke around nearly 90% of the time. It beats succumbing to depression.

I write non-political humor. Despite that, I don't spare any profession or event. I can't do political humor because, after a time, everyone hates me.

Do you? Does Trump? Not judging from his Twitter account. Obama could even make fun of the Birth certificate "controversy".
