Seriously, I'm sure that long before that poor dog froze to death he was barking and howling. I'm sure someone heard him and did nothing. I get angry when I see dogs chained up, to begin with, nevermind in sub-zero weather. People are horrible. If the owner actually made arrangements for the dog's care (debatable since he chained him outdoors), that person should face charges. Otherwise, the owner should face charges for extreme cruelty and never allowed to own any kind of animal again.

My temperamental pit bull I posted about previously here recently preferred to be chained over fenced in. Cages freaked him out for whatever reason.

Usually dogs feel extremely vulnerable when chained because if they are attacked they can't get away.

I think in this case he preferred it because he could run more. That dog was retarded. More than 1 time he got picked up by the police after escaping his cage. They would open the door and he would climb right into the back of the car. I had to get him out of doggy jail 6 or 7 times. A couple of times I think neighborhood kids let him off his chain because there was no apparent reason for him getting loose. Anyway, I thought of him because we went through this period in which every time we had bad weather someone would call and make these ridiculous lying complaints that we had him chained to a tree with no food, water, or shelter in the snow when that was never the case ever. He was inside the house every single time they showed up. He always had food, water and shelter whether he was chained, tethered, or in the cage, and we always had him inside during bad weather.

When you say cage, are you referring to a fenced yard or just an enclosure in your yard with high fencing?
