US "Ally", Saudi Arabia, Detains Thousands Without Trial

(Human Rights Watch) Saudi Arabia: Thousands Held Arbitrarily

Dramatic Increase in Detention Without Trial

(Beirut) – Saudi Arabia is detaining thousands of people for more than six months, in some cases for over a decade, without referring them to courts for criminal proceedings. Saudi Arabia’s attorney general should promptly charge or release all criminal defendants and stop holding people arbitrarily. Human Rights Watch analyzed data from a public online Interior Ministry database, which revealed that authorities have detained 2,305 people who are under investigation for more than six months without referring them to a judge. The number held for excessively long periods has apparently increased dramatically in recent years. A similar Human Rights Watch analysis in May 2014 revealed that only 293 people had been held under investigation for that period.

“If Saudi authorities can hold a detainee for months on end with no charges, it’s clear that the Saudi criminal justice system remains broken and unjust, and it only seems to be getting worse,” said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “It seems that MBS’s ‘Vision2030’ plan better describes the length of detentions without charge than an aspirational time horizon for reforms.”

Saudi Arabia’s use of arbitrary detention has faced increasing scrutiny since the November 4, 2017 mass arrest of 381 people on corruption allegations. The arrests raised human rights concerns and appeared to take place outside of any recognizable legal framework, with detainees forced to trade financial and business assets for their freedom.

Saudi Arabia’s Law of Criminal Procedure provides that a person may be detained without charge for a maximum of five days, renewable up to six months by an order of the Bureau of Investigation and Prosecution (now Public Prosecution). After six months, the law requires that a detainee “be directly transferred to the competent court, or be released.”

    [...]
Remember this the next time the US government criticizes countries like Russia, Syria, Iran, North Korea or Venezuela for their human rights records. Remember that the US government's ostensible commitment to democracy and human rights is just a cover for violent imperialism.

It's amazing how nationalism and party lens can prevent so many from seeing that which is so obvious.

That's funny.....the Saud are also the Brits Ally, along with the French. Also Japan and S Korea are the Sauds allies. Several Western nations are the Sauds ally.

Most of those allies are about Human Rights.

But do show us how Russia, Syria, N Korea, and Iran are all about Human Rights. Show us how they stand for Freedom for their Citizens. Show us how they believe in Individual Rights. Show us how they are nations that believe in law for the average citizen.

Then show us how they all give aid and assistance in humanitarian causes. Show us how they are about whats good in the world and that they are doing the Right thing.

LMAO.....if any can criticize those countries. It would be those that have the ability to recognize the mistakes they have made then did something to change from what wrong.

Of course when alliances are made, sometimes allies are accepted when they have stood against other political ideologies influence and aggression. Those with any sense of intelligence would certainly understand such a concept.

For example the Saud was instrumental in weakening Russian Communist influence all through the ME. Specifically in getting other Arab Countries to turn away from Russian Communist ideology. Choosing to side with Western Countries and their Political Ideologies.

Oh and the US has spoken out about the Sauds Human Rights violations. As have other Western Countries. So yes they can criticize their ally. Only a fool would think that they shouldn't. Or can't.

Which gives lie to the US government's rhetoric about human rights and democracy. At the end of the day, it's all about power and money for a small group of special interests. And the beggared American taxpayer is their beast of burden.

"a lie"? Or is the alternative that much worse? I don't know.

Lets not forget the Russians and the US allying themselves against Germany. Despite Stalin massacring and killing more of his people than Hitler did.

Bad bad Americans and their beliefs, huh?

An ally is an ally in a total, hegemonic war, whether they are ethically sound. If the Soviets had not been crossed by Hitler the war could have turned out very differently. Luckily, Germany $#@!ed that up and the allies had the Soviet Union as an ally. The actions of Stalin have to be ignored for the greater good in that circumstance. The actions of the Soviets on the Eastern front played a very important role.

Kind of like how the Saud played a role with the Arab countries and limiting Russian Communist Influence and aggression in the ME, huh?
