They wouldn't want that because that entails the elevation of obligation and duty above privacy and liberty. Granted, this is a socio-cultural phenomenon that is not specific to progressives but progressives believe they're community oriented because 1) they pay their taxes and 2) pay lip service to the "correct" ideals. At the end of the day, however, their personal "rights" trump all.

I'm realizing more and more it's not just progressives. That's too easy an argument. I'm looking at this topic as a challenge to my own views.
I just recently read an essay, "Mill, Stephen, and the Nature of Freedom, " by Roger Kimbal, in the collection, The Betrayal Of Liberalism, that you'd like, the excoriates a one-time ideological hero of mine, Mill and his On Liberty, and exposes it to fall into the same pattern of using reason to free yourself from the chains of the past and present social order only design a new set of chains.
