Wal-Mart Raises Hourly Wage to $11 in Wake of Tax Overhaul

The list of companies raising wages is growing larger an larger, along with bonus' and reinvestment like we havent seen in 20 yrs or more.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. is boosting its starting hourly wage to $11 and delivering bonuses to employees, capitalizing on the U.S. tax overhaul to stay competitive in a tightening labor market. The increase takes effect next month and will cost $300 million on top of annual wage hikes that were already planned, the world’s largest retailer said Thursday. The one-time bonus of up to $1,000 is based on seniority and will amount to an additional $400 million. The company is also expanding its maternity and parental leave policy and adding an adoption benefit.
Wal-Mart, the nation’s largest private employer, has fought in recent years to improve its image in the U.S., as it weathered criticism over its treatment of employees. With the wage increase and bonus payment, the company seeks to even its pay gap with resurgent rival Target Corp., while simultaneously sending a high-profile thank you to the U.S. government for slashing the corporate tax rate.
“Tax reform gives us the opportunity to be more competitive globally and to accelerate plans for the U.S.,” Chief Executive Officer Doug McMillon said in the statement.
The move comes three years after Wal-Mart last announced it was raising wages, spending $1 billion in 2015 to lift starting hourly pay to $9 and then to $10 the following year -- for workers who complete a 90-day training course. The increase cut into profit and was criticized by some longer-tenured employees as unfair to them. Since then, many states have enacted minimum wage laws, meaning that a “sizable group” of its 4,700 U.S. stores already pay $11 an hour, according to spokesman Kory Lundberg.

Wages and salaries are rising across the board. It looks like the era of stagnation has come to an end.

    More inconvenient truth.
It is amazing to me the Dems haven't and can't seem to figure out why Trump was elected. Why they lost the middle Blue Voters. Here is one big reason. The BIG TENT PARTY isn't so big anymore. Middle Blue Collar dems are not accepted because they don't agree with the left wing. They are attacked and ridiculed in today's Dem party. One is not allowed to disagree. The whole selling point of the Dem Party was the ability to differ. Not anymore.

At some point even liberals will need to admit that creating a more business friendly environment is good for all working people.

Nah............more bathroom fights are more likely than the truth. Obama was a quick draw on those fights. Real tough guy on those issues. Tough on our enemies? Not so much.

In your opinion, what would be a more business friendly environment?

    Lower taxes, less regulation

Furthermore, both Toyota and Mazda are building new plants in Alabama to build cars in the US. While the profits may go to stock holders in Japan wages and benefits will go to American workers.

More Great News After Tax Cuts :Walmart raises wages, gives bonuses after GOP tax cut

Another large corporation is passing on the benefits of the brand new GOP tax cuts to its employees.

Walmart, the largest private employer in the nation, is raising wages AND GIVING OUT BONUSES after the historic tax cuts allowed more money to do so, instead of fattening the government's coffers !!

    Beautiful.

Walmart raises wages, gives bonuses after GOP tax cut

Walmart (WMT), the largest private employer in the country, said Thursday it will raise its starting wages for U.S. store workers and offer some employees bonuses following passage of tax cuts in Washington.
The announcement came the same day the retail giant reportedly closed more than 60 Sam's Clubs stores.
The Bentonville, Arkansas-based chain plans to raise the starting wage for employees from $9 to $11 per hour and give some employees bonuses of up to $1,000.

"As you know, the President and Congress have approved a lower business tax rate. Given these changes, we have an opportunity to accelerate a few pieces of our investment plan," CEO Doug McMillon said in a statement. "Associates that don't benefit from the new starting wage increase are eligible for the bonus and it will range from $200 to $1,000 depending on your length of service."

Full and part-time hourly associates who have been at the company for 20 years or more will be eligible for the $1,000 bonus.

The new wages start February 17, 2018 and apply to hourly associates in U.S. stores, Sam's Clubs, logistics and Home Office. Additionally, the company announced it will grant 10 weeks maternity leave and six weeks paid parental leave to full-time hourly associates, including leave for parents who adopt. McMillon said for eligible employees, Walmart will also contribute $5,000 to the cost of adoption.

The company said the moves that will affect more than a million hourly workers in the U.S. are tied to recently enacted tax legislation that will save it money. They do also reflect the tight labor market in which employers are competing for workers, as both Walmart and its rival Target have been raising wages for the past few years.
