I have yet to see anything which says the charge was actually dropped. Dropping an investigation does not necessarily mean all charges were dropped.

Practicality says that an investigation should be stopped if and when there's no way to apprehend the suspect. If and when that situation changes, the investigation can be resumed.

Sweden later dropped the case, but Assange remained ensconced in the embassy because he still faced arrest in Britain for jumping bail.

Actually Sweden simply abandoned the investigation. They still think they have the evidence to convict him, they just don’t believe that they can get him before the statute of limitations expires.

If they could get him, they could and would reopen the investigation.

As I understood it, the prosecutor was nuts. And the courts realized it.

Yes, he is. They have discontinued the active investigation because they have exhausted all avenues and have no access to the accused. They have said that should he become available they can pick up where they left off.

    The charges were dubious.

Are they? A minute ago the prosecutor was nuts. What happened with that?

Your understanding is not correct. The prosecutor simply vacated the warrant and halted the investigation because he knows Ecuador will not release him before the statute of limitations expire.
