Some well-meaning progressives have been made to believe the rebellion in Syria started out good but became co-opted by Islamists only later. But that is just more deceptive propaganda that was peddled after the big lie (moderate rebels) was debunked over and over again.

Basically, after it was proven the rebels were not really "moderates", but insanely regressive terrorists, neocons and neoliberals changed the goalposts and said something to the effect of, "Yea, but the original rebellion was liberal and democratic and the evil Assad just messed it up." In reality, the rebels were always regressive, terrorist lunatics being bankrolled by foreign actors like the US, the UK, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. They were never moderate.

The Shia crescent runs right through Syria. Due to this, Syria is and has been aligned with Iran. That makes Syria an enemy of the US government, the UK government, the Israeli government, the Saudi government, and the Turkish government. Not a good list of enemies to have. The only thing that stopped Syria from turning into a terrorist wasteland like Libya was Russian and Iranian intervention.

Thanks. Don't want people just winging out the Neocon positions on topic matters. Quotes and links please, thank you, Ethereal.

Turkey presses offensive on US backed Kurds

Turkey seems to be pressing their offensive against the Kurds.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed Monday to keep up an offensive against U.S.-backed Kurdish militias in Syria, rejecting American calls for restraint and boasting of a deal with Russia to press ahead with the assault.

Erdogan’s defiant message underscored the deepening rift between the NATO allies over the Kurdish militias and signaled a possible escalation of the latest tensions in Syria’s seven-year conflict.

Turkey sees the Syrian Kurdish fighters as linked to insurgents fighting for Kurdish autonomy at home.

Washington, meanwhile, has turned to the Syrian Kurds as a proxy force against the Islamic State and a bulwark against efforts by the extremists to reclaim territory.

Turkey on Saturday announced an air and ground offensive to rout the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG, from Afrin, an enclave near the Turkish border. U.S. officials quickly called on Turkey to limit the scope and duration of the operation to avoid civilian casualties.

“We appreciate their right to defend themselves, but this is a tough situation where there are a lot of civilians mixed in,” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson told reporters while traveling from London to Paris, according to a pool report.
