We have a new thread about the new US National Defense Strategy. Their are multiple threats.

The DoD is returning to training to fight near peers and away from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

With that kind of poorly considered mission statement the Marines will not gain the benefit of reasoned thought.

I want them capable of doing it. I don't have any target lined up.

Also, over the shore near the water or over the shore via aircraft? Against peers or near peer state actors or against a third world problem?

I believe it is time for a complete review of our forces, our organizations, our roles and missions and whatever else the smart people think we should think about.

That I doubt.

I see a diminishing role for conventional forces in the coming years. I don't see how they can stay relevant going forward. So if they are not merged into special operations, they will probably be phased out or radically restructured and re-purposed.

I read the referenced article. It was long on criticism (and some accolades) but short on details.

Doing more of the same without a deliberate, serious, substantial review, means we will spend money inappropriately.
