    Eastern Cougars Declared Extinct

Eastern Cougars Declared Extinct—But That Might Not be Bad

Not since 1932 and 1938 in New Brunswick and Maine, respectively, were cougars officially recorded in the northeastern U.S.—at least in terms of breeding populations. But the big cats weren't always so scarce. Before the 19th century, cougars were abundant in this range.

However, on January 22, the Eastern cougar subspecies was officially declared extinct in the U.S. and removed from the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Surprisingly, some scientists say, this removal could be a good thing. Cougars have a long, complicated history of existence in North America, but conservationists see a future where that's not the case.

I find it interesting that one of the "extinct" cougars was filmed wandering in a supermarket parking lot...I'm pretty sure it was in Mass, or maybe Maine, but definitely in NE, and definitely last year...curioser and curioser...

Wow, never even knew they existed in the east. I know where I live in New York we have mountain lions although they tend to stay up in the mountains as a rule, tho' several years ago, while taking the train home from NYC, our train hit one not far from my train station.

I admit I looked because I thought this would be about 50-year-old MILFs formerly living in New England.

Call your state legislators and insist they approve the Article V convention of States to propose amendments.

It's ok if you disagree with me. I can't force you to be right.

I have never seen one but my dad said he heard them a few times and saw one once when hunting in WV.
