Seems like more a problem for those who try to practice by virtual office. I get calls all the time from legal services companies trying to get me to do a 1-time in-court appearance for them "tomorrow." I am like No effing way. "But it is just to request a continuance." Not how it works in these parts. You make an appearance and you are counsel of record period. I am not getting roped into representing someone for free because of some random telephone call from out of state.

Think 3rd party for 2024 folks. Clean up America.
Once I tell you that we agree to disagree there will be no more discussion between us in the thread so please don't waste your time continuing to argue your points because I will not respond.
I agree, absolutely. I get them all the time. Here, if you appear, you're on it. You then have to get permission to withdraw and there's a 15-25% chance that a judge won't let you withdraw solely b/c you aren't getting paid. My spam box is filled with these things every day. Drives me nuts. At my age, I have no interest in representing people that I don't have to.

Here the odds are 9 to 1 against them letting you out because they don't want the case sitting idle on the docket for 2 years before they can auto-dismiss it for lack of activity. About the only way you will get out is if you are one of the lawyers the judges hate to have in their court. I have done quick appearances for other lawyers in the state and for actual real legit corporations' legal departments, but never these jokers.
