Its the amount of sunlight you receive, not so much the temperatures although long periods of darkness are more closely associated with cold climates. In Alaska during the winter months when you may not get 4 hours of sunlight a day for months on end they recommend that you spend time in tanning booths. I have lived almost as long in cold climates as I have in warm (Florida, New Orleans vs Baltimore, Asheville NC and now East Tennessee) and I gotta tell you, anything belong 70 is to be avoided!!

Seriously, this is interesting. Could this be the reason Yankees are a lot more aggressive than Floridians?
I've heard this before. I get out at least three times a day even when it suck yer balls up cold. I enjoy taking those breaks. On days when it's 40 or better, I try to get one small outside project done. I hate being cooped up. Feels good to get out.

I'm getting ready to go out and take a walk. It's a mixture of rain and snow happening right now so I won't be out long but I do want to get out and stretch my legs. It helps me set my day up.
Critter aversion mostly--particularly the flying, stinging kind or the sneaky lyme disease kind. Of course, being here in Dixieland, it is a two-fer to stay away from that horrible humidity we get in july/august. Plus it is easier to clear land when there are no leaves on most of the stuff. I will carpet bomb the area with groundclear come spring and eventually fill it in over the season depending on what is on sale.

I am also building a few more new small garden beds here and there. Some will be dedicated to mother nature (i.e. wildflower/milkweed beds) and some I hope to eventually make into permaculture spots but they will probably be just veg beds for the next year. I don't like to put perennials in a new spot for at least a year, sometimes more, to get them settled without a bunch of break-through weeds before I go to the expense of filling them with asparagus or whatever.

Truth to be told I'd rather be cold than hot. I'm comfortable in t-shirt and jeans down to about 40° if the wind isn't too strong. I don't even own any sort of heavy coat, a couple of quilted flannels are the warmest clothes I've got.

Yes, being in all that cold weather gives them bad cases of exhaustipation: Too tired to really give a $#@!.

I cut most all my wood in the winter. Wearing the safety garb in summer time is unbearable. The coldest time out was in the 20's. Work kept ya warm plus the portable propane heater.
It's ok if you disagree with me. I can't force you to be right.

Most folks I know who heat with wood do that, plus it gives the wood a year to cure before it gets burned.

It is defiantly good to get out of the house, and it doesn't have to be for long.

I have had some extreme cold weather experiences. Laying in an ambush position on the DMZ in the winter of 89. We had our bear suits on and mickey mouse boots and still three in our squad got frost bite. My feet felt like liquid inside those boots. After that I bought some Danner boots that met military specs and those worked better.
