For the same reason that your BP or heart medication prescriptions have to be renewed. Medical best practices.

Your prescriptions don't HAVE to be renewed, that's totally up to you, but, in order to get refills, you need to have a new exam, when your refills run out.

Your doctor can't force you to refill your prescription, although, I don't know why anyone wouldn't, if they need that medication to live.

The point is if you want that prescription to be refilled there are medical best practices that apply. That is for the protection of the patient as well as the doctor and the prescription filler.

I am having trouble reading this thread ( and seeing anything). Too many floaters.

The last 3 times I had my eyes checked it was only a very minute change the last was no change at all. Well anyway i stopped in the place where I had my eyes done last and ask if they take "MY" prescription and make me lens for a different pair of frames. Whe I capitonalize "MY" I mean the one I paid for. I was told as you all know they can't give another pair of glasses unless i have a eye exam. I ask who made that policey? They informed me it was the law. I ask what difference does it make to the law if I get new frames with my existing prescription? That's the law she said. They are my eyes not the Governments. I guess some years in the past the ophthalmologist sent lobbyist to Washington and "said we aren't making enough money lets pass a LAW to make people have another eye exam. I guess the day will come when i want another pair of shoes i will be made to go to a Podiatrist first. Sorry , my eyes.
Call around local owned and operated glasses shops. Had a bed-ridden relative who ran into this where getting them a new exam was a non-starter and I found a local guy who was able to recreate her prescription based on the lenses and make new lenses for her.
