    Marines testing floating barges

In order to counter long range cruise missiles, the marines are testing floating barges- see pic at link. Not sure it solves the problem, but at least they are thinking outside the box.

The Corps is scrambling to piece together a new operational concept to counter growing threats around the globe, especially the new long-range cruise missilesand other sophisticated technology from near-peer competitors like Russia and China.

On April 10, the Marines will host a classified “innovation day” with members of academia and industry to discuss a new concept called Expeditionary Advance Base Operations. The event will showcase new emerging technologies that could aid the Corps in implementing this new plan.

Expeditionary Advance Base Operations “calls for an alternative, difficult to target forward basing infrastructure that will enable US naval and joint forces to create a more resilient forward based posture to persist, partner and operate within range of adversary long range precision fires,” according to a Marine Corps’ official request for information.

Marines have long thought outside the box. Historically, I think most of that was a result of WWII.

I worked with some force recon guys once - they were cool.

I also worked with the regular marine infantry and they were pretty stiff. Like stick up the ass stiff. We were in a joint field op and they had half shelters. I had a poncho and poncho liner.

Anyway, when the marines first set up their half shelters they were not exactly on-line, so their NCOIC made they take them down and try again. I laughed. I went to my fighting positing and rolled up into my poncho liner cocoon.
