There is no way to prevent people who decide to break the law to do it before hand if they do not commit crimes in the process, now maybe they can find out about it and stop it before it happens but that is more by chance than anything else. BUT we can punish those that commit crimes when caught and hold them accountable for their actions.
Seems to me you're missing your own point ... here, we have a felon with a gun killing a cop and a legal gun owner killing a cop ... so your point here should be ... 'Gun Laws Don't work'

    Because criminals follow gun laws.

Exo! THINK! The guy who was charged bought the killers gun for him because as a felon the killer could not buy it himself! The arrest was a good one and for good cause.
Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But I digress....

No I don't think that we need this. This person broke the law, adding another law is not likely going to stop someone like this,

Registration is not about punishing people that break the law it is about the left finding a way to punish the law abiding gun owners.

This is a good thing, it needs to happen more often, we have gun laws lets enforce them.
Agreed. We have enough gun laws. What we lack is proper enforcement.

Agreed. The problem is that the anti-gun mob wants to treat all gun-owners as criminals until proven innocent.

David Famigliette admits his store sold "several" guns to Stephen Paddock

So tell me? What test do you think that a gun shop owner should have so they know if they are selling to someone that is going to murder someone. In the case of the Vegas shooter, all of his guns were bought legally with the blessing of the Federal Government

Should it be the people that gave the gun owner the OK that are held accountable. And if you think about it, they were just following the rules handed down by Congress, So actually Congress should be held accountable.

NO that won't work, because they are not in charge of enforcement, So the only person that really should be held accountable is the nations Chief Law enforcement officer at the time???? YEP Toss Obama's ass in jail.

Well this is a lot easier than we are making it. We should just declare that there is a moving 50 yard Gun free zone around Police officers.

Every Democrat knows that Gun free zones like Chicago work.

You could also reduce crime by instituting martial law, a mandatory dusk-to-dawn curfew and bugging everyone's television set. OTOH, such a police state is not one in which I would want to live.
