“Svart” the world’s first Powerhouse hotel

In collaboration with Arctic Adventures of Norway, Asplan Viak and Skanska, Snøhetta has designed “Svart” the world’s first Powerhouse hotel, at the foot of the Svartisen glacier that runs through Meløy municipality in northern Norway. The hotel is situated just above the Arctic Circle.
“Svart” is the first building to be built after the energy positive Powerhouse standard in a Northern climate. Not only does this new hotel reduces its yearly energy consumption by approximately 85% compared to a modern hotel, but it also produces its own energy - an absolute “must” in this precious arctic environment. The hotel will also become the world’s northernmost Powerhouse building.

Too freaking cool. I've always wanted to go to Norway and this hotel may very well be in my future.

The US is not at the forefront of progressive environmentalism. We have a lot to learn and we also have a culture and political environment that is becoming regressive and hostile towards the planet.

Other countries have their problems too, but this country still has significant hurdles to overcome, priorities that are out of whack, and also now a president that is putting us decades back in environmental progress for the sake of political populism. We have a lot of work to do here first. Think globally, act locally.

I was thinking more of the design than the energy aspects to it. That the apparent balconies are enclosed in glass makes me think it is kind of chilly there even when it is green outside.

Sure about the US but that is mostly because the DNC got their hands on the green movement and rerouted it toward Wall Street's profit interests.
