    The Case Against Eating Fish

"Recently, I watched a diner closely question a waiter about the cream content of the tartar sauce that came with her fish and chips, but not about the actual identity of the menu-listed 'whitefish' — a term used to describe any number of fish species. Watching their exchange, I wondered whether restaurant menus need new symbols along the lines of the ones that identify gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan items — symbols that declare fish to be 'species verified' or 'plastic free.' If consumers were more aware of what was in their fish — and what type of fish they were eating in the first place — they might be able to hold key players in the fish industry accountable."

Please read and consider the article first instead of turning the thread into a "people eating tasty animals" thing. I don't agree with eating fish or any animal but since you eat fish this article is worth reading and considering.

I was hoping that you might laugh. I did actually read the article.

And as a restaurant that serves fish I can tell you that it is a constant battle to get what you are advertising. It is switched all the time.

Not usually with Whitefish as they are more often that not either raised or caught near where they are consumed.

Swordfish is the worst, as most of the time it is actually shark, The best way for a restaurant or consumer to get the correct fist is to order it with skin on, and do the filleting on site. That is what we do. It also means the fish on ice from the time it is harvested until it's arrival.

So I am not against some truth in advertising, that would actually be welcomed.

Cod is about the only fish I will eat. Have had way too many bones stuck in my mouth and throat even from alleged filets. I generally don't eat fish more than once or twice a year anyway. I will not touch anything local caught. Way too much bio-magnified mercury in these parts from all the old agriculture chemicals. We also used to have a Dow chemical plant upstream in our river. No way. No how.

I don't eat generic fish. "white" doesn't tell me if it's a fish I don't happen to want to eat. Some folks will eat anything that's battered and deep fried and smothered in tartar sauce. I don't even like tartar sauce. Chances are the fish is probably something like Tilapia or Pollock, which I don't like (the former for the flavor and the latter for the texture). Then again it could be some frankenfish from an Asian fish farm or skate, which is endangered or becoming endangered.

I've eaten fresh caught "White fish". That is different that it's a white fish (describing the color of the flesh, not the variety of the fish).

I have never heard of an eatery describing the color of the flesh that way.

IF that is happening that is really sad.
