I think people vilify guns because they're raised to believe there is a mechanical solution to every social problem. For them, fixing society is like fixing a car. Ban guns and murder goes away. To your point, this is certainly a matter of evil in some cases but, IMO, a bad way of life in others. My grandfather could have bought a Thompson submachine gun from the Sears catalog but somehow no one ever mowed down the audience at a baseball game in his day. That said, you raise a great point. I think you are spot on when you say that progressives just don't understand evil. It's something they cannot wrap their minds around. The idea that some people really are just bad people is something they can't accept.
