Broward Deputies to Carry Rifles on School Grounds: Sheriff

Broward Deputies to Carry Rifles on School Grounds: Sheriff

Better than arming teachers if the locality can afford it.

Deputies will carry rifles on the grounds of local schools in Broward County in the wake of the Parkland school shooting, Broward Sheriff Scott Israel announced Wednesday.
Israel said that only deputies who are "qualified and trained" will carry the rifles on school grounds.

"When they are not carrying the rifle, until we look for gun locks and gun lockers, the only place when they're not slinging the rifle, that will be allowed to be stored, will be in their locked police vehicle," said Israel.

The practice was implemented Wednesday morning, Israel said at a news conference.

Much better. There is at least a decent chance they know which is the dangerous end and not to leave it laying around.

So someone that does not know that a gun is dangerous? And you would still be OK with them teaching our children?

    Why?

I don't know that it is.

How many per school? Remember, this last shooting took 3 minutes. There was a cop on the grounds while it was happening. How long is the Sheriff going to maintain this policy?

    Probably not very long.

    Really ?

    Just In

'Trumps' budget calls for cutting security at schools for tax cuts ... most bullets fired by trained police officers miss their target(s) most of the time ... and miss their target because the target is not cooperating ... and their is no amount of training to duplicate a scenario of an assault-weapon wielding killer without possibly killing students and teachers in the gun battle by mistake ... in Trump's imaginary world the heroes will just kill the shooter and that will be the end of it ... I am not a proponent of arming teachers.

I agree; most people who train and fire at the rifle range are firing under controlled circumstances, so they might be a good shot at the range; however if someone is firing a semi-automatic rifle in a school and a teacher picks up his/her pistol and goes out to look for the shooter, he/she is going to be under incredible pressure, most likely having a lot of Adrenalin flowing, hands shaking, etc. It's quite possible that all of his/her shots could miss and where do all of those missed shots end up? hopefully all hit the wall and that is it; however if the hallway is crowded with students, it's possible some of the students will absorb some of the shots. It's also quite possible that one or more of the bullets finds its intended mark and stops the shooter cold in his/her tracks. there are no guarantees either way.

I think arming the teachers would be a huge mistake; instead hiring trained security or having police presence is the way to go; is it expensive? probably but what is a child's life worth to you? Do you not want the child to have the best possible protection that you can reasonably afford?

Tell the teachers thanks, but no thanks. Leave it up to the professionals.

Once I tell you that we agree to disagree there will be no more discussion between us in the thread so please don't waste your time continuing to argue your points because I will not respond.
