    Congrats to West Virginia Teachers!!

I just wanted to give a shout out to the teachers of West Virginia, who, by refusing to listen to either their public officials or their union officials, just won practically everything they demanded! THAT is how you win a labor struggle! You go on strike, you don't listen to your detractors, and you don't go back to work until your demands are met. That's how you reason with unreasonable people. The teachers of West Virginia are among the worst-paid in the nation, but that's about to change thanks to their bravery and independence! In fact, as a result of their wildcat strike, ALL state employees in West Virginia will be getting a full 5% pay raise this year! (It's amazing how more and more money that supposedly doesn't exist manages to materialize the longer a strike wears on.)

The victory of the West Virginia teachers is emboldening teachers elsewhere now. The teachers of Oklahoma, the lowest-paid in the country, are now threatening to shut down that state's schools in the near future if their demands for improved pay and benefits aren't met as well. I say more power to them!

This is one of the most difficult and least-respected professions in America. I hope the inspiration that I think we're all feeling from what just happened in West Virginia translates into a national movement. It's high time we were treated with some respect and appreciation for a change!

They should have been fired and replaced.

Totally agree IP - Yep, Oklahoma is next. Cletus and some of these other maroons will say - just fire and replace them!

BS - You can't do that without hiring people who aren't qualified to teach. Even then there would be shortages.

It'd be one thing if quality teachers only were getting a raise, but the raise is also going to tenure protected teachers that mail it in as well, which is unfortunate.

Hey, think of it like this, now with that extra money, they can afford a handgun. That is the only way an internet con will respect them.

Qualified to be a teacher. What a joke. You teach from a book that is the same as last year and will be next year. Anyone who got an "A" in high school can do that.

Well this is the way it is supposed to work. they went on strike and they were able to get their demands met.

So I say Good for them.

But I still think that the system is messed up for good teachers. The sooner we let the money follow the student, and give parents the choice of where to send their children the better.

They finally Teachers will have the ability to sell themselves and their talents. The great teachers will be swept up by the better schools and they will through merit make much more money. The terrible teachers, and there are some out there, just like any profession, will be at the low paying schools, instead of getting paid more to be terrible just because they have been there a long time.
