After the Civil War the South got off easy. They should have had their leaders hanged for treason. Their land should have been confiscated. They killed 320,000 US soldiers and should have been punished as severely as possible.

I know some people make the case that Lincoln was a tyrant. If so, his tyranny had the aim of maintaining the union of the states. If you like begin a thread to discuss Lincoln. I have dozens of books about Lincoln in addition to his collected papers. It may be time to dig deeply into them.

Your complaint in a more general sense, is that war is always damaging to our liberties.

Reconstruction problems cannot be laid at Lincoln's feet. He was in the ground.

The war goes on. Yes, martyring thousands more Southerners would have cemented a divide bigger than the one we have today, perhaps even a second Civil War when the North was weak such as during the Depression or nearly bankrupt after WWII.

    Well, no.

Freedom from want can never be a right. Nor can freedom from fear.

Real freedoms are restraints on government. How could freedom from want be protected? If it cannot be protected by our current government form is there a government form more suited to supply your every need and, of course, to tuck you in at night? Who would you choose to be enslaved in order to provide for the freedom from want? Someone will have to be enslaved to meet your needs.

You behave as if such a thing was possible. Without an honorable surrender the war would have continued on.
