    Should Synthetic Pot Be Illegal?

A 13-year-old in the U.S. who became ill after smoking synthetic marijuana and had a double lung transplant has died.

Tonya Rice tells the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review newspaper that her 13-year-old son, Brandon, died Thursday morning at a hospital in Pennsylvania.

The boy smoked the fake marijuana out of a plastic candy dispenser and suffered chemical burns to both lungs. He was put on a respirator in June and had a double lung transplant in September.

I don't know much about this synthetic pot stuff. I know it was in the stores here for a while but I think it's illegal now. I saw this article today about a kid who died from smoking it but I think the problem was not the pot but him inhaling plastic fumes (since he didn't know how to smoke it). 13 year olds shouldn't be smoking anything anyway. I think they should make the real stuff legal, but I have no idea what this fake stuff is. Maybe Spunk can clear it up for us. ;D

Never heard of it either. ??? Does it get you high? If not, what's the point?

Yep, it does get you high:

"Synthetic cannabis is a psychoactive herbal and chemical product which, when consumed mimics the effects of cannabis. It is best known by the brand names K2[1] and Spice,[2] both of which have largely become genericized trademarks used to refer to any synthetic cannabis product. (It is also for this reason that synthetic cannabis is often referred to as spice product, due to the latter.) A type of synthetic cannabis sold in Australasia is known as Kronic.
When synthetic cannabis blends first went on sale in the early 2000s it was thought that they achieved an effect through a mixture of legal herbs. Laboratory analysis in 2008 showed this was not the case and that they in fact contained synthetic cannabinoids which act on the body in a similar way to cannabinoids naturally found in cannabis, such as THC. A large and complex variety of synthetic cannabinoids, most often cannabicyclohexanol, JWH-018, JWH-073, or HU-210, are used in an attempt to avoid the laws which make cannabis illegal, making synthetic cannabis a designer drug. It has been sold under various brand names, online, in head shops and at some gas stations.
It is often marketed as "herbal incense", however some brands market their products as "herbal smoking blends". In either case the products are usually smoked by users. Although synthetic cannabis does not produce positive results in drug tests for cannabis, it is possible to detect its metabolites in human urine. The synthetic cannabinoids contained in synthetic cannabis products have been made illegal in many European countries. On November 24, 2010, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency announced it would use emergency powers to ban fake pot within a month .[3] Prior to the announcement, several US states had already made them illegal under state law. As of March 1, 2011, five cannabinoids, JWH-018, JWH-073, CP-47,497, JWH-200, and cannabicyclohexanol are now illegal in the US.[4]"

The thing that pisses me off is that they're using this kid's death to suggest the stuff is dangerous. You may as well ban matches too while you're at it, since he used those to light the pot, or ban the plastic Pez dispenser that he used to smoke with and was the source of the toxic fumes. And then you've got the reactionary governor who steps in to act as if he's doing something positive and protecting the kids. :

Don't most people know better than to smoke plastic?

The boy smoked the fake marijuana out of a plastic PEZ candy dispenser and suffered chemical burns to both lungs as a result. He was put on a respirator in June and had a double-lung transplant in September.

Interesting. Reminds me of the time I smoked oregano.

I'd imagine it's healthier to smoke the real thing.

I smoked a pipe when I was a teen. It was good.

Like you say, I am sure the real stuff is probably much healthier. These synthetic things no doubt have all sorts of chemicals and flavorings which probably add to the cancer risk down the line.

Pipes are nice. Pipe tobacco has a VERY strong aroma though. I like it but it would permeate the house.

That's what I would suspect anyway. Why take the chance?

Yep, that's why you have to smoke it outside. Cigars too. This topic is making me want to smoke something I don't even know when the last time I did was. Oh, that's right over at my neighbor's I had some 'cereal' as MMC calls it. That was about a month ago. Before that I'd guess it had been at least a couple of years without smoking any sort of thing.

I chew tobacco on long walks or when I work outside. I haven't smoked anything since I quit smoking cigarettes 10-12 years ago

    What brand of tobacco?

I did snuff for a while but quit. It was kind of disgusting although I did enjoy the buzz.
