Liberals believe in an all powerful centralized government. However, many are quite hypocritical about it. Many are elitists and think that government needs to exert its power on everyone but them. The elitists believe they should have all the individual liberties advocated by conservatives, but screw everyone else.

Maybe you heard about it in high school.

The fact remains it's the Democrats who are pushing disarming the public "for their own good". It's the Democrats who believe Elitists are best able to tell Americans how to live, what to think and what to believe. Yes, the Republican attitude toward gay marriage and abortion are just like the Democrat elitist attitude, but overall, Republicans do favor individualism and self-determination. The Democrats do not.
