My mum-in-law made a soup this weekend called winter veg or something like that. Basically spinach, potatoes, carrots, onions, lima beans in a cream/milk broth. It was ok but one thing she doesn't do is spice up her stuff, it was kinda bland.

I'm thinking about making it but adding some cheese - parma maybe, a $#@!load of garlic and something peppery - pepper plus maybe some green peppers. And more onions. Some more roots also, turnips maybe. And cabbage.

She used dried/soaked lima beans, they were really good but I like lima and most other beans.

I don't like beans in chili though, not sure why. I don't like bean texture in chili I guess.

Funny, I can't imagine chili without beans - it's a flavor thing. Of course I don't think I've had beanless chili!

Beans are (were) added to chili as a filler, and I tend to dislike... complicated foods in a texture sense.

That soup - I'll eat all of the potatoes first, then all of the carrots, then all of the beans, etc. If there are beans in chili, I'll pick them out and eat them first, then the chili, so I don't dislike beans so much, I just don't like them complicating matters for me.

    Yeah, I'm anal.

    I have a sister-in-law who segregates her food.Perhaps it's the same thing.

Ooooo, sounds really good with the changes you're planning....especially cabbage....cabbage just MAKES a winter vegetable soup. When I want to jazz up something that's a bit bland, especially a soup, I really like to use a pepper and spice blend, like Lawry's Seasoned Pepper (cracked black pepper, red and green bell pepper flakes, and several other spices). And OF COURSE, a $#@!load of garlic!
