Cleveland Bar panelists discuss #MeToo in the legal profession

Cleveland Bar panelists discuss #MeToo in the legal profession. Are lawyers more or less likely than other professionals to engage in sexual harassment in the workplace? Has the #MeToo pendulum of calling out sexually inappropriate behavior swung too far? That depends on whom you ask, according to panelists at Tuesday's Hot Talks discussion sponsored by the CMBA.

I would say sexual harassment in law firms is at the same rate as in the general private sector- which you would not think to be the case - lawyers know the law and what happens with lawsuits). But humans are human.

I agree with one thing said and thats if women would report any sexual abuse or harrassment instantly it would have much more favorable results. When women decide 20 yrs later to come forward that will always be suspect.

Its completely unfair to ruin a mans career or life over a 20 yr old accusation if it cant be proved

Sure, but I would assume that there is even less incentive to come forward about it. That might create an environment in which is becomes more of a problem (varying by workplace). From the article:

"You sue a law firm, you have a whole law firm on the other side, and it may be difficult to find someone willing to represent you," she said. That's why women tend to quit, find another job or put up with it rather than file a formal complaint and be labeled a troublemaker, she said.

Yes, I think you are probably correct. These legal communities are small. However, I have defended a number of these law firms where we have had to 'work out' settlements without a public lawsuit. The mere threat of a lawsuit with those magic buzzwords of 'sexual harassment' would be enough to scare the Pelosi out of the partners b/c the corporate clients are likely to run for the hills.
