Competition between nations continues. We also have private Mars missions. What happens if Russia gets there first and claims the planet as a territory of Russia?

And as we have seen in other threads, Trump has called for a space force.

Speaking in a new documentary by Andrey Kondrashov, President Putin said: "We are planning unmanned – and later manned launches – into deep space as part of a lunar program and for Mars exploration.

"The closest mission is very soon, we are planning to launch a mission to Mars in 2019."

Doubtful Russia could establish a legal claim on Mars. Even if they did, claiming and holding are two different matters.
