The constitution is a voluntary compact between sovereign States, so the southern States had every legal and natural right to dissolve that compact and to reclaim the sovereignty they ceded to their agent, the federal government.

Saying that the federal government had the authority to keep the southern States in a compact against their will is like saying a lawyer has the right to be employed by you even after you no longer desire their services.

In other words, you are basically saying that the southern States were the slaves of the northern States and the federal government.
