I've watched SNL from the beginning and still watch it every week. The show has always had its ups and downs - it's missteps and screw-ups and things that just didn't work. When they do those nostalgic retrospective compilations of the early years, they leave out all the crap and ballast. (Does anyone remember the weekly Jim Henson feature from Season One? Painful!) George Carlin was the first guest host and his monologue bombed big-time. I've got the first four seasons on DVD and watch an episode or two every so often, and believe me - for every unfunny, embarrassing routine on a current show, there's an even worse one that aired forty years ago.
