Police: Fire exits blocked in Russian mall fire that killed dozens
March 26, 2018 -- Russian authorities said Monday the fire exits were blocked and no alarm went off when a fire blazed through a shopping center, killing more than 60 people

Russia's Investigative Committee said there were "serious violations" at the Zimnyaya Vishnya mall -- also known as the Winter Cherry mall -- which broke out Sunday in the Siberian city of Kemerovo. It burned through a movie multiplex and a children's play area, fire officials said. Children were among the casualties. In an early report, first deputy Vladimir Chernov said officials found 13 bodies in the movie theater. Dozens of children also were reported missing. Monday, officials said the death toll had risen to 64.

Smoke rises over the Zimnaya Vishnya shopping center in Kemerovo, Russia, Monday after a fire erupted and killed dozens of people -- including several children, officials said. Four people were arrested in connection to the blaze.

Deputy Gov. Vladimir Chernov questioned why emergency exits and doors were shut. Local politician Anton Gorelkin said "fire exits were shut, turning the complex into a trap" and that "there was no organized evacuation." "Four people were detained and interrogated within the framework of the criminal case, including the tenant of the premises where the epicenter of the fire was allegedly located," a statement by the Investigative Committee said. It added that a criminal case, involving death through negligence and fire safety violations, has been opened.

Nadezhda Suddenok, director of the company occupying the upper two floors of the mall, was one of those detained. Anton Gorelkin, Kererovo's State Duma representative, accused the city's deputy mayor of accepting bribes when he approved the 2013 opening of the mall, the Moscow Times reported. "The only way that he could have overlooked the blatant safety issues, I think, is in one scenario: his eyes were clouded by money," he wrote in a social media post. "No amount of corrupt money can make up for the lives of our children."

At least 64 people died in a Kemerovo, Russia, shopping mall fire on Sunday. Four people were detained for questioning.

Firefighters evacuated at least 120 people from the mall, which was packed with parents and children on the first weekend of a school recess. At least 10 were hospitalized, and about 200 animals in a mall petting zoo died, officials said. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Putin criticized after mall fire kills 64, including 41 children
March 27, 2018 -- While Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed "criminal negligence" caused the deaths of 64 people, including 41 children, in a fire at a Siberian mall, protesters scrutinized the president and other officials for breaches in the building's safety regulations

On Tuesday, relatives of the victims, along with thousands of others, rallied outside of the mall's remains to call for those responsible to step down over safety breaches. It's emerged that the mall had a faulty fire alarm system and that its fire exits were locked.

Protesters in Kemerovo, Russia gathered on the central square on Tuesday, demanding answers about what led to a mall fire that killed 64 people, including 41 children.

The head of the committee said the mall's fire alarm system had been out of order since March 19 and the public-address system had not been turned on, so people were not warned to evacuate. Protesters carried photographs of some of the children who died in the blaze and others carried posters that said, "How many really died," "Who's really guilty" and "How much do your closed eyes cost?" Putin, Kemerovo Mayor Ilya Serdyuk and Sergei Tsiviliev, the deputy governor of the region, appeared in front of the crowd to comfort the victims' families but faced criticism instead.

Crowds chanted "Resign," "The truth!" and "Shame!" to drown out officials' remarks. Six busloads of police later arrived to contain the growing crowd as officers blocked the entrance to the local administration. Putin, after laying a wreath during his visit, said, "people, children came to relax. We are talking about demography and are losing so many people because of what? Because of criminal negligence, sloppiness."

Relatives compiled a list of 85 who are still missing, mostly children. Many will only be identifiable by DNA testing, officials said. Health minister Veronika Skvortsova said 13 people were hospitalized, including an 11-year-old boy in a serious condition who had jumped from a window. Both of his parents died in the fire. The fire's cause remains under investigation. The shopping center's owner will be questioned and four people, including two employees of the fire alarm system company, have been detained.

Russia mall fire ignited by ejected youths, business owner says
March 28, 2018 -- As authorities try to find the cause of a shopping mall fire that killed 64 people, mostly children, the owner of a business there said it was sparked by a group who'd been escorted off the property

Nadezhda Suddenok, director of the company that rents the top two floors of the mall, said she believes the fire is a case of arson. According to court documents, Suddenok said a group of 17- to 27-year olds who had previously been escorted out of the mall set the place on fire. "These teenagers were of different nationalities, I can't say which nationality exactly, but with a black beard, like those worn by people of the Chechen, Caucasus, nationality," she said.

A man lays flowers and toys in Moscow, Russia, Wednesday at a makeshift memorial for victims of a fire at a Siberian shopping center this week.

Alexander Bastrykin, head of the Russian Investigative Committee, told Kremlin President Vladimir Putin the cause was most likely a short circuit. The Sunday blaze at the four-story Zimnyaya Vishnya shopping mall in Siberia eventually engulfed the area. Forty-one children were among the dead and 76 people were injured. Russian authorities say the fire exits were blocked and no alarm sounded when flames went through the mall -- and said there were "serious violations."

Funerals for the dead began in Kemerovo Wednesday, with the first services taking place at the Kirovskoye cemetery. Putin declared Wednesday a national day of mourning, and said a criminal investigation has been launched. Five people have so far been detained in connection with the fire.
