    A 15-yr-old Dog's Gift to a Grieving Man

For those of you who are animal lovers, particularly dog lovers, here is a heartwarming story you might enjoy.

I was in Augusta, Georgia where I had been for several weeks cleaning out my mother’s home following her recent death as a result of numerous health issues and complications. On this Sunday, my final day there, as I was just about an hour from leaving to return to the foothills of the northeast Georgia mountains and my five rescue dogs almost four hours away, I walked out into the front yard to take one last look at the home of my parents and I saw in the front yard what appeared to be a very old dog that was in obvious distress. He would walk in a semi-circle, then fall to the ground, then struggle back to his feet and do it again. I saw him do this same thing at least three times as I walked over to him.

It was heartwarming, but it was also really sad.

My dog is getting up there. It's breaking my heart.

He's only 12 but he's around 100 pounds. I hope he has another 3 years in him.

My dog is 6 years old and weights around 12lbs. I hope he lives for at least another 10 years. He's a great companion.

My little Shiba Inu is currently 18-years-old. He's somewhat blind and getting increasingly senile but otherwise in good health. We know that his days are numbered, but we are trying to keep him as happy as possible. He has been pacing a great deal and demonstrating confusion - part of the senility. I don't know how long he has left. Their average lifespan is 15 years.

    Wow, 18 is up there.

We fed him a raw meat diet, so he was never fat and never a garbage can. We also never got him all of the shots that you are supposed to, since there is evidence that unless they are absolutely necessary, they do more harm than good - particularly the rabies shot. However, we had another dog that was 18 when he passed. He was never overweight either. He didn't become senile, but just stopped eating. So far Kuma is still eating and house trained but his faculties are deteriorating, so I am preparing for the worst.

Before I had a dog, myself, I didn't really think about them much. I've had cats pretty constantly for forty years, but a dog only occasionally, and when I did I always sort of thought about it as another family member's pet. Since being given my Gemma a little over five years ago and raising her from a 10-week-old puppy, I notice dogs everywhere, and I find myself scanning the streets, alleys and parking lots wherever I go, looking for dogs who might be homeless and in need of help. It may sound silly, but if I could have one superpower, it would be to be able to mentally communicate with animals and just drive or walk along and call out to any creature in trouble and have them come to me - or lead me to where they were if they were chained, caged or too sick to walk. I wish it were that easy. Oh well...little victories.

I remember hearing a story about a man who was walking along a path above a beach, and he saw a woman standing amid a thousand starfish - helpless and dying in the sun. She was picking them up one at a time and throwing them into the ocean. He went down to the beach and talked with her, saying, "What are you doing? You'll never save them all." The woman smiled and, reaching down and tossing another starfish into the water, said, "I know...but I can save this one. And this one. And this one. And this one..."
