No doubt pistols come in handy, but I fail to see why a $1200 pistol is superior to a $500 one in such a situation.
During the Battle of Hue City, the Marines made excellent use of the 106mm Recoilless rifle mounted on jeeps. Rather than facing sniper fire in the streets, they blew holes through the walls of buildings and advanced behind the enemy. In the 80s(?), the 106mm's were retired and the LAWs were implemented. Many Marines thought that was a mistake, but they adapted.

To advance, small infantry teams worked with tanks and 106mm recoilless rifles to generate routes through walls and buildings, while M42, 40mm self-propelled antiaircraft weapons and mortars provided direct and indirect suppressive fires. Unfortunately, these tactics were unable to prevent high American casualty rates.
