President Trump on Thursday denied knowing about a six-figure payment his lawyer offered to an adult film actress just before the 2016 election in exchange for her silence about an alleged affair she had with Trump years earlier.
Trump pinned the blame for the $130,000 payment on his lawyer, Michael Cohen, who paid Stormy Daniels days before the 2016 election as part of a nondisclosure agreement Daniels and Cohen signed.
"You’ll have to ask Michael Cohen. Michael is my attorney. You’ll have to ask Michael," Trump told reporters traveling aboard Air Force One after denying knowledge of the NDA.
His comments marked the first time he had spoken publicly about Daniels, whose allegations have attracted significant media attention in recent weeks.
Trump also said he did not know the source of the money Cohen paid to Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford.
Daniels has claimed Trump had a brief extramarital affair with her shortly after his wife, Melania, gave birth to their son. Although she shared the story of the alleged sexual encounter with CBS's "60 Minutes," her lawyer has said Daniels has more details to share with the public and has fought in court to have the NDA tossed.
Trump did not sign the agreement, and the White House has maintained that the president denies ever having a sexual relationship with Daniels.
Reporters have dogged the White House and the president with questions about the affair for weeks.
