I was at Campbell in 88-89 when the Blackhawks were called crash-hawks. And in fact was in a crash- luckily nobody was hurt seriously.

Two soldiers in the Army's 101st Airborne Division were killed Friday night in a helicopter crash at Fort Campbell, located on the Kentucky-Tennessee border.

The crew was doing routine training at the time, according to a news release, and the cause of the accident is under investigation. The names of the soldiers who died have not yet been released.


"This is a day of sadness for Fort Campbell and the 101st Airborne," said Brig. Gen. Todd Royar, acting senior commander of the 101st Airborne Division and Fort Campbell. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the Families during this difficult time."


The AH-64E Apache helicopter crashed at a local training area on Fort Campbell just before 10 p.m. Friday. The two soldiers who died were in the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade.

It was my first field exercise with the unit. Go figure. I didn't realize anything was wrong at first. Stupid private.

I was a promotable Captain. OH-58. Lots of snow. Whiteout conditions. We were looking for the ground. The ground found us first.

We took off from LZ1 at Campbell, went up, heard a bang, and auto-rotated down- probably 500 feet.

I think my hard landing involved a change of only 30 feet or so. We bent things up. Quite a bit.

Who knew it would be hard to determine which direction downhill was?

I have no idea how damaged our bird was. I imagine its wheels and struts got screwed. It was night, we just bailed and charlie miked.

No condolences stated by those they listed who served inside of similar circumstances? One says he has no idea how damaged their bird was. The bailiff should be wrapping up enough rope to cover at least nine yards.
