    Why copy an existing reply

I am bemused as to why people copy someone else's reply and post it on their answer. Some are many paragraphs and there it is reposted again about half an inch from the original, WHY ??? I know I am a newbie but I wonder if anyone else finds this annoying. There is no need for it.

we quote the previous so everyone else knows who you're responding to and what you're responding to. Otherwise, it becomes difficult to pare the wheat from the chafe.
You don't have to, but it makes for easier identification.

Its protocol to let the person know you are answering him. You don't want to do it, then don't.

If the quoted post is long, you can delete most of it. People will still be able to tell who you were responding to.

I have been on this forum for almost five years and this is the first time the issue has arisen. I don't think its a high priority for most members.

As someone else mentioned, the best thing to do is to "quote" only that part of the post that you're directly responding to. It only takes a few seconds to delete everything else. People who "quote" a long, long post, particularly one that has photos, graphs, etc., on it, are mostly just being lazy, I think.

What I dislike is people who quote someone but who don't include the link back to the quote post. Like ^^that. All you have to do is click Reply with Quote and the forum includes the link. Like \/\/ this:

I remember when @Bo-4 would do that but pointing to his own post calling it stupid or delusional.
