This study was not just about the British: "The research combined results from 83 studies conducted in 19 countries, tracking nearly 600,000 people who drank alcohol."

It says: Based on the current guidelines, a 40-year-old man "can expect to live one to two years less than men who have no more than seven drinks per week."

This last statement may be somewhat misleading because it's based on averages. Actually, a person might live one year, two years or 20 years less. These studies are about risk, not certainty. Yes, if you're lucky, you might even live a lot longer than those who don't drink.

I had a cousin who drank one or two mixed drinks every evening. I never saw him drunk. He would just take an occasional sip of his drink. He always appeared to be healthy and had a good job. One day he had pains in his liver area so he took time off from work to see a doctor. He was diagnosed with liver cancer and died within a few weeks. He was only 60 years old. So he lost more than a year or two off his life.
My father died of liver cancer and rarely drank so...

Yes, liver cancer has other causes besides alcohol. I had another cousin who died at age 63 from liver cancer. He may have had some wine occasionally, I'm not sure. But someone close to him suspects it was from taking massive doses of vitamins, minerals and herbs. He was a health nut and reportedly had every supplement you could think of and took them in large doses. I believe that could become toxic.

Drugs can cause liver damage: The average 75 year old takes 3 or more prescription drugs per day, and 5 or more is not uncommon.

Hepatitis C can cause liver damage.

Fatty liver disease: Excess fat in the liver can cause inflammation and inflammation is said to put one at higher risk for cancer.

Absorption of harsh chemicals at work and/or at home.

So, for some people, it could be a combination of things working together; it's not always easy to pin it down to one thing alone.

At least you recognize it's a risk. I would just add another cautionary note: The risk tends to increase with age as our organs gradually wear down and function less efficiently. It's often so gradual that we hardly notice it's happening. Like some people start eating smaller meals and less meat because their digestion is not what it used to be. The capacity or tolerance for alcohol becomes less as we age. And the processing by our liver and kidneys slows down. Everything gradually slows down with aging. So my philosophy is simple: We need to take better care of ourselves as we get older and not try eat and drink as though we are still teenagers.

We all have to die someday; may as well live according to your lifestyle and be happy as opposed to living 5 or 6 years longer but yet being miserable the whole time. Just my two cents.
God Bless America, God Bless our Military and God Bless the Police who defended the country against the insurgents on January 6, 2021

Think 3rd party for 2024 folks. Clean up America.

Once I tell you that we agree to disagree there will be no more discussion between us in the thread so please don't waste your time continuing to argue your points because I will not respond.

Dude, relax. Enjoy your life. Living in fear is probably much worse for you than drinking daily.
